There's a lot to like about Samsung's new GalaxyS5 smartphone -among them, its relative lack offeatures.Don't get me wrong. The company's new flagshipsmartphone has plenty of innovations, includingwater resistance, a heart rate sensor and afingerprint reader to bypass security passcodes. The screen measures 5.1 inches diagonally, whichis slightly larger than its predecessor's 5 inchesand much bigger than the iPhone's 4 inches. TheS5's camera is capable of taking 16 megapixelimages, an improvement from 13 megapixels inlast year's Galaxy S4 ( Review I Pictures). What's most notable, though, is Samsung'sdecision to focus on features people mightactually want. Some of the S4's features - suchas automatic scrolling of content when you tiltyour phone or head - came across as clutter orgimmicks that often didn't work as advertised.Samsung also simplified the phone's interface.Like other Android phones, the Galaxy S5 is stillmore complex to use than Apple's iPhone , butthe flip side is you get many more ways tocustomize it, including the ability to unlock aphone by drawing a pattern on the screen ratherthan using a passcode. In the S5, Samsung playsdown or removes many of the S4's less usefulfeatures, while rearranging the settings andlayouts to make things easier to find. The phone goes on sale Friday around the world, though a few carriers in Korea released it early.Through the major U.S. carriers, it will cost about$200 with a two-year service agreement or $600to $660 without one.Samsung is emphasizing fitness activities in itslatest phone. The heart rate sensor, located on the back justbelow the camera lens, doesn't measure yourpulse continuously. Rather, you have to hold yourfinger on the sensor for about five seconds beforeand after your activity. The information getsstored in Samsung's S Health app. Other appdevelopers can make use of the sensor, too.If you need continuous tracking, Samsung hasthree fitness-focused wrist devices out Friday. They sync with the S5 and other Samsung phonesto give you a broader snapshot of your activities.I'll be reviewing those features separately afterI've had a chance to use the phone for more thanan afternoon. In keeping with the fitness focus, Samsung alsooffers water resistance, meaning you cansubmerge it as much as 3 feet deep for up to 30minutes. You can splash away by the pool, orsweat on it during a run.Sony Corp. goes further in letting you dunk itslatest Xperia phones up to 4.5 feet deep, butmultiple plastic covers must be intact to get theprotection. With the S5, there's only one cover toworry about, plus the phone's removable plasticback. The S5 isn't meant for underwater use, butI was still able to take photos and listen to audio. The camera's 16 megapixel resolution brings theS5 closer to what stand-alone cameras offer, though the megapixel count is just one factor. Inmy limited tests, many indoor shots came outblurrier compared with the 8-megapixel iPhone 5s( Pictures). I'll be reviewing the camera featuresmore extensively. For now, I'll point out that the camera interfaceis simplified. With the S4, I would often turn onspecial modes and features by mistake and missthe shot trying to turn them off. The S5 reducesyour choices or at least hides many of them. Forinstance, one button combines many of theprevious choices and offers you the relevant onesbased on circumstances. The S5 also promises afaster auto-focus, though it'll take time to testthat promise. The fingerprint reader is what excites me mostabout the S5. When it arrived on the iPhone 5slast fall, I had a lot of fun using the fingerprintreader to unlock the phone without needing topunch in a four-digit code.To set it up on the S5, you simply swipe yourfinger over the home button eight times. You cando it with up to three fingers. The devicerecognizes my print when I swipe it sideways orupside down. It even works after handling oilyIndian bread, though the phone drew a line after Idipped my finger in grease. It chided me to cleanthe surface and my finger. The S5 goes further than the iPhone in letting youuse your fingerprint to buy things at retail storesthat accept PayPal's mobile app. You swipe thesensor instead of entering your passcode.( Also see : Samsung Galaxy S5 fingerprint sensorcertified for PayPal support)Your fingerprint can also be used to unlock anew, private mode on the phone. When you exitthat mode, photos and other documents youdesignate as sensitive are hidden as if they neverexisted. Some people may be concerned about losing theirfingerprint identity to hackers. Unlike passcodes, fingerprints can't be changed. I'll just note thatit's optional, and you can still use passcodes theway you always have. Like Apple, Samsung keepsthe fingerprint ID in a secured part of the phone,so it never goes to any servers. When PayPalneeds to verify an identity, the phone simply tellsPayPal's app about the match, without needingto send the print ID.Parents will also appreciate a kids mode filledwith age-specific apps for each child. But to leavekids mode, all you have to do is enter a birth yearthat's 2001 or before. The app is even helpfulenough to tell the kid to pick an age older than13. You'll need to pay $5 a month for a premiumservice that includes a real passcode, not justyour birth year. One area where Samsung phones still fall short isin their construction. Although the removableplastic back makes it possible to replace thebattery, it comes across as cheap next to theiPhone's glass back and the HTC One's metalbody. And Samsung hasn't completely removed all theclutter. There are still two separate apps to listento music, watch video and buy apps. The S5comes with the standard Google apps for Android, but Samsung Electronics Co. loads its own, too. These aren't huge shortcomings. There's more tolike than not.
